On September 26, 1996, it was reported that an unidentified woman had committed suicide inside the hotel and casino by jumping off the 26th floor balcony at about 1 P.M. Originally, the Luxor's pyramid-shaped hotel tower was to be sheathed in bronze-glass, complete with a massive replica of the famous hanging gardens of Babylon, with lagoon-like pools, waterfalls, and a beach.
Approximately 3,000 employees were planned to be working at the new resort and casino. It would even include a monorail outside the casino that would transport guests from the resort to the neighboring Excalibur. Inside, the planned 90,000 square foot casino would sit within a giant 30-story atrium with multiple special attractions. The resort, which was first named 'Project X' during planning and construction, would hold up to 2,500 rooms and would use what were known as 'inclinators' instead of elevators due to the unusual shape of the hotel tower. On November 14, 1991, Bennett, chairman of Circus Circus, announced that he would be building an all new resort and casino adjacent to the Excalibur and Hacienda that would take the shape of an ancient Egyptian pyramid. History Concept and Construction Concept Īfter the success of William Bennett's Excalibur, which opened on June 19, 1990, Circus Circus Enterprises wanted to expand their casino operations more on the Las Vegas Strip.
